Park Ranger - Why We Love Disney! - August 27, 2003

21:03:33 [tiltawhirl] Welcome to the Park Rangers chat! Tonight we are talking about why we love the Disney attractions so. Why are they different from other carnival attractions?

21:03:38 [MissB] Have to decide whether we need any restaurant ressies!

21:03:50 [tiltawhirl] Imean besidesthe less than hygenic carnival personel ;-)

21:03:54 [MissB] carnival--sputter, sputter!

21:04:05 [Tink1] <<at minus one.........and hated to come home

21:04:21 [tiltawhirl] thats cool Paul...I am a bit envious of all of you going. But I will be there next year

21:04:23 [PaulF] How was the trip?

21:04:28 [disneylove] hello eveyone

21:04:28 [MissB] cool, Nanc, where did you stay?

21:04:37 [MissB] Hi, love!

21:04:40 [smallworld] Hello all! Glad you're back Tink1, but I understand completely!

21:04:49 [Tink1] YC and it ws hotter than hell

21:05:05 [BetsyAnn] I understand taht Nanc - but glad you came in tonight!

21:05:29 [MissB] hang out by the water and sip cooling beverages!

21:05:49 [tiltawhirl] bring on the heat!

21:05:52 [BetsyAnn] Is the chat moving slowly for anyone else?

21:05:56 [PaulF] <----Yankee who does not do WDW in between the months of Mar and October. lol

21:05:56 [smallworld] Tink1, Seeing how hot it was...can you ever see yourself living near WDW?

21:06:14 [tiltawhirl] it sure is for me

21:06:36 [BetsyAnn] right with you PaulF - Westerner who will not go between June and Sept!

21:06:38 [tiltawhirl] oh I would live nearby in a heartbeat small world

21:06:51 [disneylove] heat..no thanks was 97 today heat index of 110

21:06:52 [tiltawhirl] july and august are the best for Disney weather

21:07:03 [MissB] what! tilt, are you made of fire?

21:07:19 [Tink1] no smallworld

21:07:21 [BetsyAnn] Welcome BarbD to Park Rangers chat! Tonight we are talking about why we love the Disney attractions so. Why are they different from other carnival attractions?

21:07:27 [PaulF] those Krispy Kremes are eating your brain aeway Tilt. ;)

21:07:28 [Tink1] need to be a little cooler

21:07:32 [tiltawhirl] I should have been born in the amazon basin ;)

21:07:48 [BarbD] Hi

21:07:57 [disneylove] hi BarbD

21:08:00 [MissB] So BetsyAnn, shall we begin the discussion?

21:08:21 [BetsyAnn] Tilt are you ready to get this party started?

21:08:43 [smallworld] Krispy Kremes?! I love those gooey babies and was am so glad I could find them when I moved from SC.

21:09:21 [tiltawhirl] sooo...I thought we'd begin by giving our own personal accounts of why we think the attractions at the world are so much different. I am thinking about how we FEEL about the attractions rather than just "a much better queue" or "the theming" lets talk about how we feel when on a disney attraction

21:09:25 [BetsyAnn] Tilt?

21:09:40 [tiltawhirl] :)

21:09:53 [BetsyAnn] ;)

21:09:59 [MissB] It's more than when you're on an attraction...it starts when you see it!

21:10:01 [tiltawhirl] step up tp the plate...no order...but nobody is exempt...lol

21:10:07 [disneylove] just about anyone can ride the rides

21:10:11 [smallworld] BetsyAnn, I can tell you what I love about the Disney attractions. I don't think you can ever see everything no matter how many times you visit. Theming is everything! And you just don't see that at Cedar Point or King's Island!

21:11:05 [MissB] Attention to detail is just sooo incredible. Who else would think of the engagement ring in the pavement on the way OUT of the Haunted Mansion?

21:11:08 [disneylove] most are tame rides

21:11:20 [Tink1] its background music..........life should come with background music

21:11:33 [tiltawhirl] yes the family appeal has great value to many. go on miss B that is true. Any more detail?

21:11:36 [MissB] tame but with atmosphere, music, water, etc

21:11:45 [smallworld] How can you go without making sure you're at the gate before they open for all the ceremony. It's like 'they like me, they really like me!' LOL

21:11:51 [BetsyAnn] I feel like I have been transported to where ever - a haunted hotel, a mansion, into a pirate battle, where children are so cute and never fight

21:11:56 [MissB] Well, first you see the Haunted Mansion at a distance...and it's lovely

21:12:06 [PaulF] and the hidden speakers to play that music. Doing their best not to spoil the mood or illiusion of a particular 'scene'

21:12:07 [MissB] and then you get closer and you begin to see the creepy details

21:12:07 [tiltawhirl] Paul? what do you think?

21:12:18 [tiltawhirl] erm...cool

21:12:21 [tiltawhirl] lol

21:12:22 [MissB] You go by the cemetary and you say, "look, who are these people"

21:12:28 [MissB] and the CM's are in costume

21:12:40 [MissB] there's so much transition time from the "real world" to the attraction

21:12:41 [tiltawhirl] is anybody elses chat lagging?

21:12:58 [BetsyAnn] just a bit here - tilt

21:13:01 [Tink1] yes

21:13:06 [smallworld] It's the only vacation where DH can lose himself so much he never thinks or talks about work. The ONLY place...

21:13:12 [disneylove] yes tilt it is

21:13:16 [MissB] Had to tell, tilt, since I'm so loquacious

21:13:18 [BetsyAnn] That is a good way to say it - MissB - transition

21:13:23 [PaulF] the difference has always been that an amusement park is a collection of rides while Disney tries to simulate you being in a fantasy world.

21:13:34 [MissB] smallworld, why do you think he can lose himself?

21:13:53 [smallworld] Loquacious? God bless you!

21:14:01 [MissB] lol

21:14:12 [smallworld] Boy, I'll have to think about that one a minute...

21:14:28 [tiltawhirl] I agree about the Mansion being one of the best MissB, also, I think the same feeling is generated by the Tower of terror. When I went on it first, I was perplexed with the disorientation when walking up the path to the entrance. I found out later they had slanted the walk at such an angle to

21:14:36 [PaulF] glad I keep Mr Webster's book on the desk here

21:14:58 [MissB] okay, Paul, did I spell it right?

21:15:02 [BetsyAnn] lol, PaulF

21:15:15 [tiltawhirl] casue this dissorientation. Now thats a sure catalyst for FORCEFULL suspension of disbeleif! LOL

21:15:21 [tiltawhirl] cause

21:15:40 [tiltawhirl] my spelling is attrocious tonight. sorry folks.

21:15:46 [MissB] yes, taking you from your usual situation and just IMMERSING you in the new situation

21:16:07 [BetsyAnn] While the attractions are very great at Disney - Disney Parks are just layed out to move you right into the illusion

21:16:11 [smallworld] As someone mentioned, they're not just amusement rides, WDW manages to really transport you to whatever and wherever the ride is themed... It's a world within itself and with CM's who are 'onstage' every minute they help you 'believe' that you are part of the production.

21:16:36 [PaulF] yes, it was spelled right ;)

21:16:40 [MissB] I agree, smallworld, the CMs really help the belief!

21:16:40 [tiltawhirl] what is your favorite all encompassing attraction Paul? one that you think really does the best job at getting you there? same question for all

21:16:44 [smallworld] immersing...I like that...you are loquacious!

21:17:09 [BetsyAnn] Welcome Tinkerbell to the Park Rangers chat! Tonight we are talking about why we love the Disney attractions so. Why are they different from other carnival attractions?

21:17:11 [smallworld] Haunted Mansion for me!

21:17:34 [tiltawhirl] here here smallworld!

21:17:53 [BetsyAnn] Good question Tilt

21:18:27 [MissB] How about the under the roots waiting area for "it's tough to be a bug"?

21:18:44 [MissB] Does anyone else feel bug-sized there?

21:18:53 [tiltawhirl] thats also a cool one. I love to hear Beauty and the Bees down in there

21:18:56 [PaulF] Spaceship Earth is the one that always sets my mood on a trip. it's why we make it a point to do that before anything else.

21:18:59 [BetsyAnn] I got to go with PoC at Disneyland -- you go from a quiet boat ride into the heart of a battle and then you are there!

21:19:01 [smallworld] And, it's not just MK. DH and I love EPCOT's World Showcase. You really feel 'immersed' in each country, especially with the food and CM's who are really from each particular country.

21:19:02 [MissB] lol, yeah!

21:19:18 [MissB] World Showcase is true Magic!

21:19:48 [MissB] The use of music there is excellent, and the themed entertainment.

21:20:12 [smallworld] PaulF, you're gonna make me cry! Yes, yes, yes to Spaceship Earth. Do you sniff the air for the part where you can smell the fire?!

21:20:13 [BetsyAnn] That is a great point MissB -- Disney gets you from the you step in and arranges the enviornment to set the stage so to speak

21:20:14 [PaulF] Wandering back off the main promenade at the UK in WS gives you that feeling of actually being there, IMHO

21:20:28 [tiltawhirl] how does it set the mood for you? sortof like setting a tone of "this is my favorite...I love it, and now I will reference everything to it, and have a better vacation because of it"

21:20:43 [tiltawhirl] thats how it works for me anyways

21:21:02 [tiltawhirl] music is a seriously powerful helper in mood transition

21:21:23 [smallworld] I think someone mentioned the music before and isn't it funny how you don't consciously 'think' about it,,,but what wouldn't WDW be like if it wasn't filled with the music in the background everywhere?!

21:21:35 [tiltawhirl] I love to hear the Wonders of life pavillion background music, as well as some of the tomorrowland background tracks

21:21:42 [MissB] Another thing about WDW is that I feel totally safe and totally pampered. It really promotes relaxation and playfulness if you aren't being a commando>

21:21:55 [tiltawhirl] Night Fire Dance is my current fav

21:21:55 [PaulF] of course Smallworld. LOL That and Jeremy Irons voice. "But not all was lost. hebrew and muslim scholars......"

21:22:00 [MissB] I feel like I'm finally back when I hear the music at Epcot..

21:22:03 [tiltawhirl] LOL

21:22:24 [BetsyAnn] Music is so important yet something you may not notice unless it is not there

21:22:35 [tiltawhirl] hiya Poly :)

21:22:39 [BetsyAnn] Welcome poly to the Park Rangers chat! Tonight we are talking about why we love the Disney attractions so. Why are they different from other carnival attractions?

21:22:44 [poly] aloha amigos

21:22:57 [Tink1] hey poly

21:23:16 [MissB] They vary the music, so many typical parks just do kind of upbeat muzac.

21:23:16 [poly] hey tink

21:23:23 [Tink1] <<misses Walter still Paul

21:23:30 [PaulF] Actually, what always tells us "we're here" is the music you hear when walking from the bus drop off to the front gate at Epcot. It's a memory trigger. Memory of my first ever trip, back in 96.

21:23:41 [smallworld] And for us repeaters, hearing that music and knowing which attraction is coming up, getting closer and closer...

21:24:00 [MissB] Paul, that's just the music I mean! It's so totally different and so right for the place!

21:24:05 [BetsyAnn] The Wonders of life pavillion does a great job of setting the stage with interaction, music, and smell!

21:24:12 [tiltawhirl] what do you think is the antithesis of the best attraction at WDW? the worste thing at WDW? and why?

21:24:14 [Tink1] still miss Tomorrows Child as well

21:24:42 [PaulF] BetsyAnn, I'm listening to that music right now, on Live365. :)

21:24:47 [poly] I have a 4 set cd of park music. play it all the time

21:25:00 [tiltawhirl] ahhh live365...the best 5 bucks a month I ever spent

21:25:05 [smallworld] Geez, I know there must be something bad...but I just can't think of it...

21:25:09 [BetsyAnn] Cool Paul!

21:25:25 [MissB] The plaza of Tomorrowland is just dead

21:25:29 [BetsyAnn] Very hard question Tilt!

21:25:32 [PaulF] Mouseworld Radio 2. All the best Epcot music.

21:25:39 [MissB] All those big box buildings and just not enough "je ne sais quas"

21:25:57 [tiltawhirl] althought they never play the living seas pavillion tracks ;-)

21:26:06 [smallworld] Which 'box buildings' do you mean?

21:26:25 [tiltawhirl] it is much better now than before the reno, thats for SURE! LOL

21:26:35 [tiltawhirl] it looked like a 70's motel

21:26:42 [PaulF] The worst? Easy. Empty attractions. CoP. 20K Leagues. Timekeeper. etc

21:26:47 [BetsyAnn] I am going to duck right after I say this :)

21:26:53 [tiltawhirl] booyaa Paul

21:26:56 [MissB] Oh, Timekeeper, Buzz, some of the stores

21:27:23 [tiltawhirl] JOURNEY INTO YOUR IMAGINATION! There. I said it. LOL

21:27:33 [BetsyAnn] Small World in MK disappoints me to no end -- It is not even close to the feel as the Disneyland version!

21:27:36 [smallworld] I guess come to think of it, I really don't like the starkness of the Test Track building. It reminds me of the Reynolds Aluminum building in Richmond, VA. Ugh!

21:27:44 [tiltawhirl] I agree Betsyann!

21:28:01 [BetsyAnn] lol Tilt --

21:28:30 [smallworld] CoP! You're right PaulF. We always try to visit during 'slower' times and of course we have missed CoP the last 3 years!

21:28:37 [poly] oh, BetsyAnn- i agree. small world is kind of tacky

21:28:37 [PaulF] the one sided train to Conservation Station at AK bugs me. I always try to look behind and see what they're hiding.

21:28:42 [BetsyAnn] Tilt have you seen the newest version of Journey

21:28:45 [MissB] Mission Space looks like it will be properly moody

21:29:14 [BetsyAnn] I got to agree with empty attractions being very hard to keep ignoring

21:29:18 [poly] according to my daughters- Space rocks

21:29:24 [smallworld] Smallworld?? Oh...the ride...ahem. I haven't been to DL, but I do wish they would update this ride.

21:29:25 [tiltawhirl] last I saw it was in 2002

21:30:20 [BetsyAnn] My issues with SW in MK is that feels like cheap ripe off of the orginial -- they just throw up a building, painted a mural and said - that will do! :(

21:30:39 [BetsyAnn] lol Poly!

21:30:46 [smallworld] Why don't they do something with 20,000 Leagues? I mean how many 'sea' movies do we need to spark some Imagineering? Nemo, Atlantis, The Little Mermaid, even Lilo & Stitch...

21:30:48 [tiltawhirl] my mother is a diehard smallworld fan.I find it boring. The irony being that the last time I was there, I went with my mom, and small world was under rehab...boohoo lol

21:31:16 [MissB] BetsyAnn, I think that part of Fantasyland is just too crowded

21:31:41 [BetsyAnn] Small World is the attraction I remember waiting for it to open at DL - it will always hold a place of wonder for me

21:31:48 [poly] I also think El Rio del tiempo is kind of cheesy

21:32:11 [BetsyAnn] And don't get me started on Fantasyland at MK - you will all be throwing things at me very quickly!

21:32:11 [tiltawhirl] Big thunder is my most memorable wait to open, and an absolutely captivating attraction to me

21:32:22 [smallworld] BetsyAnn, not having been to SW at DL...what are the differences, inside and out?

21:32:36 [MissB] lol, poly, it is, but Mexico has always has a corner on tacky!

21:32:40 [tiltawhirl] el rio del boring is next on my hit list. lol. But everybody likes different things :)

21:32:43 [PaulF] well folks, time to go. Have a good night!

21:33:00 [tiltawhirl] nice to see you Paul. Take care

21:33:01 [MissB] night Paul

21:33:05 [BetsyAnn] The major difference is the entrance of loading area - there are wonderful toparies

21:33:15 [BetsyAnn] Good night Paul

21:33:39 [tiltawhirl] not to mention the clock tower minature doll soldiers!

21:34:14 [BetsyAnn] There is a wonderful clock that rings every 15 minutes and the clock has a wonderful parade of character dolls every hour and 1/2 hour

21:34:23 [BetsyAnn] exactly Tilt!

21:34:35 [smallworld] So, why DO we keep going back again and again?

21:34:55 [tiltawhirl] I say vicariosity

21:35:00 [MissB] there's always somethng more to see!

21:35:03 [poly] it is our place to escape

21:35:18 [BetsyAnn] The building has an interesting, colorful draw to it - you just have to move towards it - it pulls you into the line!

21:35:22 [tiltawhirl] reliving moments that are so special to us, again and again. It brings a certain kind of contentment for me

21:36:10 [BetsyAnn] I am as close to totally relaxed as I can get

21:36:14 [poly] we just had the worse trip ever and feel a great need to return asap

21:36:36 [MissB] oh, no, poly, what happened?

21:36:37 [poly] and we will

21:37:05 [poly] my husband's appendix ruptured while we were there

21:37:15 [MissB] egad!

21:37:16 [BetsyAnn] I can honestly say I have only had one trip that was disappointing and it had nothing to do with Disney - just the people I was with! May be why MK holds no magic for me!

21:37:21 [MissB] scary!

21:37:27 [BetsyAnn] ouch poly

21:37:56 [tiltawhirl] thats too bad poly! How is he?

21:38:00 [smallworld] Maybe you all will understand why I tell my non-Disney believer relatives (worse than in-laws!) that to me WDW is my cabin on the lake. When I was growing up so many people had the second home - cabin on the lake - where they went every summer or weekend. I HATE camping...so it's WDW for me! ;-)

21:38:04 [MissB] they must have been powerful downers, BetsyAnn, to sap the fun from the MK!

21:38:20 [poly] he is okay nowspent all of his time in the hospital

21:38:25 [tiltawhirl] Bingo smallworld!

21:38:36 [poly] and we spent all of our tme visiting him

21:38:48 [smallworld] Must have been 'relatives', Betsy Ann!

21:39:28 [MissB] poly, you were robbed of that vacation, no wonder you're ready to go back

21:39:28 [BetsyAnn] MissB, the "sin" in my eyes is that they brought the outside world into my play place - and no they were not relative - my relatives all play very nicely at Disney!

21:39:44 [BetsyAnn] and I also did not marry him! :D

21:40:05 [BetsyAnn] smallworld - that is great way to put it!

21:40:30 [tiltawhirl] that can be quite the downer BetsyAnn. But I tend to be cynical of Disney in some respoects, which offsets suspension of disbelief

21:41:03 [MissB] Good for you BA! :-D

21:41:09 [MissB] :D ?

21:41:34 [tiltawhirl] you go girl!<snaps fingers>

21:41:49 [smallworld] Is it Disney that corporation that makes you cynical? They've done some crazy things...

21:42:30 [tiltawhirl] it sure is smallworld. Everything at WDW begins with a line and ends with a cash register

21:43:07 [BetsyAnn] you are right Tilt -- it was not always that way -

21:43:22 [MissB] they seem so desperate now

21:43:24 [tiltawhirl] it wasn't, and that saddens me

21:43:51 [tiltawhirl] however, it is still the best place in the world for having fun, provided one can afford it

21:43:58 [tiltawhirl] :)

21:44:14 [smallworld] You're so right about the cash register. Since we first started going to WDW in 1986, the Main Street shops have changed from a kitchy downtown where they also had souvenirs to merchandise, merchandise...and no more Magic Shop or Penny Movie Arcade...

21:44:24 [BetsyAnn] Good point Tilt -- the costs always are a factor for Disney

21:44:47 [tiltawhirl] And on that happy note, I am going to thank everybody for coming, and BetsyAnn who is a great host! :)

21:44:47 [smallworld] The Corporate face is spoiling the Magic!

21:44:57 [MissB] it is a shame

21:45:21 [smallworld] I gotta run. So nice to talk with all of you!

21:45:24 [MissB] I think it's a bad idea of how much growth and profit there can be, created by the dot.com fantasy of the 90's

21:45:30 [BetsyAnn] And thank you Tilt - you are a wonderful host partner!
