This will be a
very short and pretty boring day! We kick off our 2009 WDW
and Disney Cruise vacation today, but we are getting on the road late
today and starting the long drive to Florida from NY. This
year we are starting off at the new Bay Lake Towers for two nights.
We are staying in a studio and looking forward to trying out
this brand new resort. Sunday we move to our old favorite -
Beach Club Villas. The following Friday we are off to
Port Orleans French Quarter for a couple days and then on to our 4 day
Disney cruise - complete with a great group of Tag's that
will also be sailing with us! :-D Last, we return
on Thursday and check in to the Animal Kingdom Villas - Kidani Village
to try out that new resort. Again - we are very much looking
forward to trying this new property! Its going to be another
busy and memorable vacation!
Getting
back to
today - I only worked a half day, so
that left me the early afternoon to do a couple errands and then load
up the van. BOY - do some people pack a LOT more when you
drive
than when you fly! ;-) Between the extras I
brought from
the cruise, but the girls packed a TON more for this trip that we
usually do. Kristen blamed the cruise too! :-D
But
by folding down the larger back seat I was able to get everything in
and still have one seat for the far back. Told the girls that
would be the time out seat if the decided to get snippy. ;-)
Once we were
ready
to hit the road we still had several stops before
getting on the highway, but those went pretty quick. Then it
was
time to start our long trek south. right around 1200 miles
and
from what I saw quite a bit of construction along the way to slow
things down. We were going to go down 81, but decided that
the
long delays along the way would not be worth missing Baltimore and
Washington. It worked out pretty well with just a few times
we
got slowed down by construction. Around 6pm we were near
Philly.
NOT the best planning, but a stop for dinner at Cracker
Barrel
allowed time for traffic to clear out a bit. The worst
slowdowns
were near the toll booths. Once you got off to pay, it took
FOREVER to get back on the road again. VERY busy.
We
hit Baltimore and
Washington late enough that the traffic was pretty
light. THAT was nice. And for the rest of the night
it just
got less and less crowded on I-95. This is why we drive at
night.
Low traffic and kids sleep most of the night hours.
Kristen
and I switched driving every 2 or 3 hours and it was pretty nice.
Still - around 5am Kristen had had enough and I
wasn't
ready to drive again yet. So we stopped at a rest area for an
hours snooze.
The van got pretty stuffy, so we decided to
continue on and got back on the road. The states were
falling
behind us quite quickly. It was pretty uneventful
(whew!) up until Midnight and the start of day two. (Don't
worry - Day two driving was pretty uneventful too! ;-)
